Altrincham RA send their Eggheads to the County RA Quiz
This Tuesday (19th October) sees members of Altrincham Referees Society head to Moss Farm, Northwich, to take part in the County RA quiz. Usually committee members would be in attendance but unfortunately it has fell on a date that all committee members are busy.
We wish our members the best of luck, here's hoping we do better than previous years.

October 2013 Meeting
Altrincham and District FA & Altrincham Referees Society are pleased to announced David Coote (Manchester FA RDO) will be coming to Timperley Taverners Social Club to deliver a training session titled "Taking Opportunities" which will cover aspects of law, moving on from a poor assessment, review of match incidents and using body language and time management to ensure control after incidents.
A few things to note about our esteemed guest:
- He likes to travel, he has been to Peru, Cuba, Costa Rica, South Africa, Vietnam and Thailand
- David got his taste of refereeing when thrown a flag at the age of 12, he was asked to run a line on a Newark Alliance Match to prevent his dad's side getting a fine from the league committee
- His father played professional cricket for Nottinghamshire CCC, uncle Mick played cricket too and David himself captained Nottinghamshire at age group levels
- David started refereeing at 16, he progressed at pace through the Notts Alliance, Northern Counties East League, Evo Stik League and the Blue Square North
- In 2006 he was promoted onto the Football League Line and his first game was a League Two tussle between Stockport County and Hereford United
- He has run the line at Wembley on the FA Vase Final in 2009, the two competing teams being Whitley Bay and Glossop North End
- He was appointed Nottinghamshire FA Referees Development Officer in 2010 and returned to Wembley twice, as 5th official for Tottenham vs Portsmouth and as an assistant for the FA Trophy Final between Barrow and Stevenage
- A former Premier League assistant, David has the Premier League in his sights again, he wants to become a select group referee and see where that takes him.
September 2013 Meeting
This Thursday's meeting will involve a bit of role play, the committee have decided that instead of sitting on our backsides and listening to a guest speaker this month, we should do something different. Role plays have been tailored to the needs of everybody and will involve scenarios which most of you will have seen on Saturday and Sunday mornings out on the local park.
The evening is being led by Vice Chairman, Martin Howe.
As always the more you put in, the more you get out.

August 2013 Meeting
It only felt like it was last week when the season ended but ... Football is back already! That means it's time to start donning our black shirts (or assessors caps) again as ... Refereeing is back! ... and last but not least this means ... The ADRS is back too!
The August meeting of Altrincham Referees Society is on 22nd of the month and will be a video presentation on Foul Recognition led by our chairman, Richard Bartlett.

The society would like to congratulate Anthony Taylor on his appointment to two World Cup qualifiers in Slovakia and Azerbaijan.
Record Attendance at Cheshire's RA-FA Event held in Altrincham
Cheshire's annual RA-FA event took place on 28 February 2013 in Altrincham and saw over 170 referees and officials attend.
Altrincham's very own FIFA and Premier League referee Anthony Taylor, discussed the merits of teamwork for match officials.
Tha annual event took place at the Cresta Court Hotel and was attended by Cheshire referees, tutors and assessors spanning a range of ages and qualification levels.
The evening was split into two with presentations from Cheshire FA Referee Development Officer Trevor Massey and former Cheshire FA and now FIFA referee Anthony Taylor.
Trevor drew on his experience as a former Premier League Assistant Referee to lead an informed and thought provoking discussion on dissent within the game.
There was also a long-service awards presentation to two Altrincham RA members, Dennis Phillips was issued a certificate for 25 years and Roy Entwistle for 40 year continuous service to football.
Anthony gave some great advice and tips to referees of all ages and abilities with a presentation on teamwork, using practical demonstrations and video analysis to pass on some on his knowledge from refereeing at the top level of the game.
Trevor Massey, co-ordinator of the event said: "It was a tremendous evening all round, from the great venue and fantastic numbers of people in attendance to the excellent presentation by Anthony Taylor.
"The annual RA-FA event continues to grow year-on year and everybody seemed to take something away from it.
"It's great to see so many people enthusiatic about officiating, from those at the bottom at grassroots level to the top level assessors in the audience, all keen to learn and share their own knowledge and experiences with others."
The January meeting will go ahead on Thursday 24th January 2013 at the usual venue at 19:30.
It is planned that this meeting will include a short presentation on how we, as match officials, should conduct ourselves on the ever-growing range of social media sites.
This is a very relevant and serious matter, therefore, it would be invaluable to know what you should and shouldn't be posting.
100 Club Reminder
The January meeting sees the return of the 100 club prize draw.
Members should recall that we have been asking for your contribution since September and those who have not yet renewed their membership should do so quickly so that they do not miss out on all 12 prize draws.
The price for a number will remain the same even after the first draw, so the incentive is to pay now and enhance your chances of winning.
There are still numbers available so new members are always welcome in the 100 club.
The committee would like to welcome our newest recruit, Jonathan Blower, who has snapped up the vacant secretary role.
Our thanks go to Steve Johnson who has done an excellent job as acting secretary during the time it has taken for us to find a successor.
We also look forward to working with Jonny and hearing any ideas he may have in terms of improving our society.
The December meeting took place on Thursday 20th December.
The meeting was more of a social event instead of a formal meeting with a guest speaker presentation. Members who attended were split up into diverse teams and used their combined knowledge to win the quiz.
It was a great way to end 2012 in terms of society meetings and there will be more of the usual in 2013.

If you have any photos of yourself (and/or other members) on the green stuff or just in a refereeing environment, it would be greatly appreciated if you could alert a member of the committee.

New Meeting Format
The committee have come to the agreement to trial a twist on the traditional meeting format.
From the October meeting, the guest speaker will present first and then the business and correspondence will take place following the presentation.
The committee will welcome feedback as to the effectiveness of the trial and then come to a decision whether to keep the new meeting format on a permanent basis.
100 Club Update
The society are looking to continue with this fundraiser, therefore, if you didn't buy a number (or two) this term, make sure you get one in the upcoming term.
The year for the running of the 100 club has been revised to commence in January and end in December.
Also, the prize money up for grabs each month will vary depending on member's participation, so obviously the more participants, the more money you could potentially win at the meeting.
The price remains the same at £12 per number for the 12 months, so at £1 a month, this is surely a sustainable investment!
Remember, it's not just members who can play, your family and friends can join in the fun also.
The September society meeting saw Premier League Assistant Referee Simon Bennett answering a wide scope of questions from the members in attendance.
The answers that followed gave us an insight into life at that level of refereeing and juggling it with full time employment.
Simon also shared some of his most surprising experiences in his refereeing career and his ascension up the refereeing ladder.
Some answers gave us great refereeing tips that I'm sure the members won't forget in a hurry!
The society would like to thank Simon for his time and also thank members for their co-operation in collating the questions.

George Cain was our first guest speaker of the 2012/13 season and he presented on the topic of on-field management.
All in attendance would agree that the presentation was a hugely entertaining one with a lot to learn as well as a lot of George's past experiences.
Some of the key learning points where that refereeing only takes place once the ball is out of play and that dissent or problematic situations can be quelled by being pro-active; whether it's holding your whistle out to the side at a free-kick to indicate the kick won't be taken until the whistle is blown, or whether it's saying something that players can't respond to.
The committee would like to thank George for his time afforded to the society.
New Basic Referees Course
There is due to be a New Referees Basic Course in November on the following dates;
It will be a two day practical course over 17th and 18th Oct 2012 at Sale Utd FC with the admin night at Altrincham FC on 22nd October 2012
The New Basic Referees Course now comes under the Altrincham Referees Development Programme.

Promotions In The District
As the 2011/12 marking season drew to a close, many referees had eagerly awaited to find out whether they had achieved their goals.
Altrincham Referees have a lot to shout about this season in terms of promotion; Tom Kirk and Rob Goodwin-Davey have been promoted to Level 3, Ryan Watson achieved promotion to Level 4, Chris Clarke got promoted to Level 5 and Carl Barratt to Level 6.
The society as a whole would like to congratulate these members on these great achievements and we hope that they, and all our members, have continuous success in the future.
